Within hours following Governor Steve Sisolak’s order to close all Nevada schools due to the coronavirus, the Clark County School District put out a list of locations where students can receive a free breakfast and lunch during the closure.
School Food Distribution Centers Established
Food distribution centers will be available at 28 schools across Southern Nevada. These food distribution centers will be open from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. every day, the school district said in a statement.
Furthermore, academic resources will also be available for students at these sites. Keep in mind, anyone picking up food at the sites must have school-aged children with them, the district said.
As well as working with community partners, the Clark County School District is also working with local and state governments to establish more food distribution areas; that information will be shared with parents as soon as it is available, the district stated.
All public, private and charter schools across the state are closed, and will remain closed until April 6 at a minimum. Governor Sisolak indicated that schools will not reopen until the state chief medical officer gives the all-clear.
School Districts Across the Country Affected
Twenty-two other states including Maryland, Washington, and Virginia, as well as public school districts across the country, have closed schools. Currently, Las Vegas has 17 reported cases of coronavirus; however, that number could be much higher, considering that testing for Covid-19 has been thus far, limited.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends canceling gatherings of 50 or more people, for at least eight weeks to control the spread of the coronavirus. Currently, most restaurants and bars are open in Las Vegas, but concerts, major sporting events, and shows have been canceled. Furthermore, MGM Resorts and Wynn Las Vegas have closed down their Las Vegas properties.
